Jekyll & Hyde - - Critic

Repertory Philippines produces Jekyll & Hyde the musical

A single word that could fully describe the performance of Jekyll and Hyde by REP for its 45th anniversary : ORGASMIC.
It is not for lack of better term nor is it vulgar because you will see that as you sit there full of expectations that are so high you'd have to look up and break your neck to see clearer; you'd realize that your expectations will be lacking.

From REPs set design (although minimal) to the lighting. The ensamble to the lead roles, everything was clearly , with no exaggeration, pure-heavenly-bliss. Everything complimented with each other. Their voices seamlessly blended, the shadow play with the lights was artistically done. The acting - stirred emotions in ones soul.

Some parts of it though could have had been even better if , for example, they used the techniques done in other productions of Jekyll and Hyde for Dr. Jekyll's transformation. BUT even though that might be a good idea, Michael Williams' performance on it left me awestruck. With minimal (if you count makeup) prostetics, his take on the transformation especially in the Jekyll and Hyde duet is really wonderful. The way that he sang the song will make you see Jekyll's inner plight. AND FOR LACK OF BETTER TERM: PERFECT.

Lucy, played by Kalila Aguilos, was nicely portrayed although a bit mellow and sensual for my taste reminded me of the alure of a gypsy and as the play runs on, is quite effective. Her voice is one to watch out for as well.

Those two are a few to look out for in this performance but the others performed brilliantly as well.
