Articles - Off Broadway musicals
Smaller productions open in Off and Off off Broadway the whole time. Some make it to Broadway, some are just appreciated by a few.
Certainly there are really nice jewels in the Off Broadway scene. Some very funny and inappropiate for the big audience, but that will sure delight some few geeks. Just saying this seeing the poster that illustrates this article: The Evil Dead musical. Totally a horror-humor movie geek gift.
Rent the musical, a Broadway hit started in Off Broadway as a humble production. An enough people and money came in to make it o the big scene. Now we all can enjoy such a great piece of work. And not only that, Rent even got to be a feature film produced by Robert de Niro. Recently we met an actor that was offered to join Rent in it's off Broadway moment and he declined because it didn't seem so nice as when it got to Broadway, now he regrets it so much!
Another clear example is The Little Shop of Horrors. Started as an off Broadway, made it to Broadway and then to a film. Funny to see how the same composer later did so many Disney projects: Alan Menken.
Right now you can catch really big productions in New York's off Broadway, not like in the old days. Today we find super productions like the Argentinean "Fuerza Bruta" or "Stomp" or internationally acclaimed "Voca People".
But wait, big time musicals are found this days in the off Broadway circuit: Rent, Avenue Q, Naked boys singing...
Our advice. Catch all the off Broadway shows you can before they disappear or succeed and get to pricey :-)
