November 2022 marks the re-opening of REP’s theater doors, and its buoyant return to the live stage, with the much-awaited live theatrical run of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s glorious musical masterpiece CAROUSEL.
Originally slated for May 2020, and set to be the crown jewel of the REP 2020 theatrical season, the musical was postponed due to the global pandemic that halted live theater the world over.
With Music by Richard Rodgers and Book & Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, CAROUSEL is a sweeping musical that follows the story of Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan. Under a dark sky and tapestry of stars, their soulful encounter sets them off on a whirlwind love affair. The choices they make, and the unfolding events that shape their fate and that of their daughter Louise, are tested in the crucible of life and beyond.
CAROUSEL, touted by Time Magazine as the greatest musical of the 20th century, features some of musical theater’s most iconic songs, including the most hauntingly beautiful pieces from the well-loved R&H canon, “If I Loved You” and “You’ll Never Walk alone”. Richard Rodgers, the show’s brilliant composer, later wrote that CAROUSEL was his favorite of all his musicals.
