One UK Tour to watch out for this 2015 is The Bodyguard The Musical. You may have noticed the trend that has engulfed musical theater productions as of late. Adapting productions from films that we have enjoyed and loved. With a film that has Whitney Houston’s hits all over the original soundtrack. It seemed destined for a musical adaptation indeed.
The Bodyguard The Musical is about Frank Farmer. He used to be from the Secret Service. Fast forward to years later and he’s hired to protect Grammy-Award winning recording artist Rachel Marron from her stalker. Soon they become too close for comfort. And they fall in love.
Years after Whitney Houston’s untimely demise, fans still think of her fondly through her hits. The Bodyguard The Musical served as a theatrical homage to the beloved diva. The only similarity in the story perhaps is Houston having a stalker too. But not as deadly as the one presented in the story. It would be Frank’s efforts to protect Rachel from the unseen stalker that will serve as the meat of the story.
Much about The Bodyguard The Musical is about Rachel Marron though. She is the gem to be protected. A high profile celebrity in her own right. She attracted so much attention, even the scary one. But it doesn’t stop her from being a diva. And it’s her mood swings that Frank had to put up with.
One of the iconic scenes from the film was Frank leaping onstage to catch a bullet for Rachel. It can be said that it would be the point where Rachel softens up to Frank. Even if Frank wore a bullet-proof vest for the job, it still took effort and guts to do it. On whether his lines are limited to spoken ones? It’s for the viewers to find out for themselves.
The playlist consisted of mostly hits from Whitney Houston. It was a convenient excuse to stage a karaoke musical here at The Bodyguard The Musical. The upbeat tracks are “Queen of the Night” (which was from the movie) and I Wanna Dance with Somebody. The latter song was included in this film. The mellow tracks consisted mostly of “I Have Nothing”, “Run to You” and the film’s signature hit “I Will Always Love You”.
Much of the positive buzz came from the performance of Alexandra Burke as Rachel Marron here in The Bodyguard The Musical. She first rose to fame as the grand winner of the reality competition program X Factor. She won in X Factor way back in 2008. Now a multiple Brit Award-nominee. She will be the main draw here in The Bodyguard The Musical.
The Bodyguard The Musical 2015 UK Tour officially kicks off on September 29, 2015. First stop will be the Edinburgh Playhouse. For tickets and special deals, click here for more details.
