Today, we’re going to be discussing why EVERYBODY HATES MARÍA and a little bit of a nerdy rant on #WestSideStory ! This is yet another installment in “in-defense of ingenues” series where I seek out to redeem some of my personal favorite characters, that for some reason, everybody just unanimously is annoyed by. So of course, it only felt natural to bring this series back so I we could discuss and defend my girl, María from West Side Story.
West Side Story is of course, based on the 1957 broadway musical of the same name. It’s a-then modern take, on Romeo and Juliet set on the streets of New York. The original West Side Story film premiered in 1961, was nominated for 11 academy awards, and won 10 of them including best picture. Steven Spielberg’s remake hit theaters this past Holiday season, and is a heavy contender for awards season. It’s a
