Get a Sneak Peek of City Center Encores! Staging of The Tap Dance Kid

New York City Center’s 2022 Encores! season will open February 2 with The Tap Dance Kid, directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon, continuing through February 6.

Choreographer Jared Grimes has created new tap sequences for the Henry Krieger-Robert Lorick-Charles Blackwell musical, with Lydia Diamond penning a new concert adaptation and Joseph Joubert serving as music director.

The company is led by Jackson (Grown-ish) as Uncle Dipsey, Tony nominee Joshua Henry (Carousel) as William, Tracee Beazer (Frozen) as Carole, acclaimed tap dancer Fleming Jr. as Daddy Bates, Shahadi Wright Joseph (Us) as Emma, Chance K. Smith as Winslow, Walker (The Lion King) as Ginnie, and Bello (Caroline, or Change) as Willie.

Nominated for seven 1984 Tony Awards, the musical tells the story of Willie, a 10-year-old boy from an upper-middle-class Black family, who dreams of becoming a professional tap dancer.
