Patrick Wilson in The Phantom of the Opera: How Broadway’s Curly Became Raoul

phantom of the opera musical vs. Movie

Patrick Wilson played Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, in Joel Schumacher’s 2004 film of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, opposite Gerard Butler as the Phantom and Emmy Rossum as Christine. He arrived as a two-time Tony nominee straight from Broadway’s Oklahoma!, sang the role himself, and spent a good part of the shoot on horseback, holding a sword or underwater. Here is how he got the part, what he did with it, and where he went next (spoiler: back to Broadway, as a producer).

Who played Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera movie?

Patrick Wilson. Variety reported his casting on April 1, 2003, and Playbill followed the next day, noting that the stage role of Raoul had been created by the late Steve Barton (Variety). By June, the three leads were set: Butler as the Phantom, the 16-year-old Rossum as Christine and Wilson as Raoul, “Christine’s childhood sweetheart,” with filming due to start on September 15, 2003 at Pinewood Studios near London (Variety, Wikipedia). Lloyd Webber said he and Schumacher had always wanted “a young and relatively unknown cast.”

Was Patrick Wilson a Broadway star before Phantom?

Very much so, which is why theater fans cheered the casting. According to IBDB and a 2004 BroadwayWorld profile, his résumé ran like this:

  • Touring: a Marine in the first national tour of Miss Saigon, then Billy Bigelow in the touring Carousel (IBDB, BroadwayWorld).
  • Broadway debut: The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm in 1999 (IBDB, BroadwayWorld).
  • First Tony nomination: Jerry Lukowski in The Full Monty (2001).
  • Second Tony nomination: Curly in Trevor Nunn’s revival of Oklahoma! (2002), the show he had recently starred in when Phantom came calling (Playbill, Variety).

He also had HBO’s Angels in America in the can, which brought him an Emmy nomination (Variety, Wikipedia) and a Golden Globe nomination (Wikipedia). As a teenager he had seen the stage Phantom three or four times between 1989 and 1992, he told IndieLondon.

Did Patrick Wilson do his own singing in the movie?

Yes, and that is the heart of the case for the film’s Raoul. Lloyd Webber has been quoted calling Wilson “one of the great natural lyric tenors from the theater,” and Wilson told Variety that the composer “didn’t have a lot of musical notes” for him. Rossum also came in as a trained singer: she had been with the Metropolitan Opera since she was seven (Variety). Butler was the gamble. He had no formal training, had sung in a rock band, and took voice lessons before auditioning for Lloyd Webber with “The Music of the Night” (The Northern Echo, BBC).

The one lead whose singing was replaced was Carlotta: Minnie Driver’s operatic vocals were dubbed by soprano Margaret Preece, although Driver sings “Learn to Be Lonely” herself over the end credits (Andrew Lloyd Webber’s official site, Margaret Preece, Wikipedia). Wilson and Rossum’s rooftop “All I Ask of You” is the duet most fans remember; we break it down in our Phantom songs explained guide.

How is the film’s Raoul different from the stage Raoul?

On stage, Raoul often gets the reputation of the nice guy in the cravat. Schumacher gave the film version more to do. Wilson told Variety that Raoul became a man of action: he rides bareback, fights the Phantom with a sword in the cemetery and nearly drowns in an underwater trap in the lair. He told IndieLondon that the bareback riding was the toughest part of the job. It is a Raoul built to stand up to a Phantom, rather than simply wait for Christine at the end of the night.

How did the 2004 film do?

What did Patrick Wilson do after Phantom?

He became one of Hollywood’s busiest leading men, with Little Children and Watchmen (Wikipedia), and then a horror fixture. He starred in every Insidious film and directed one of them (Variety), and played paranormal investigator Ed Warren opposite Vera Farmiga across The Conjuring films, through 2025’s The Conjuring: Last Rites (Variety, People).

Broadway never lost him, though. He returned in the plays Barefoot in the Park (2006) and All My Sons (2008), and in 2026 he became a lead producer of the new musical The Lost Boys at the Palace Theatre, which earned him a third Tony nomination, this time for Best Musical (IBDB, Playbill, Wikipedia). Not bad for the boy in the cravat.
