“Take Me or Leave Me” is the Act Two duet in Rent where Maureen and Joanne fight about who they are and whether they can love each other anyway. Some of the most memorable songs are the painfully honest ones, and this is the kind of song you’d be scared to sing to your partner in the middle of an argument. This post used to reprint the full lyrics. We’ve replaced them with a guide to what the Take Me or Leave Me lyrics mean, who has sung them and where to hear the song legally, quoting only a few words.

What are the Take Me or Leave Me lyrics about?

The song is a breakup fight sung as a duet. Each woman takes a turn telling the other: this is who I am, and I’m not changing.

  • Maureen goes first. She’s a performance artist who loves attention, and she brags that people have been staring at her on the street since puberty, boys and girls alike. Her point is that she’s a diva who needs a stage, and Joanne knew that when she chose her.
  • Joanne answers. She’s a lawyer who looks before she leaps, loves margins and discipline, and makes lists in her sleep. She hates mess, but she loves Maureen, and she doesn’t know what to do with someone so impulsive.
  • Then they collide. In the final section Maureen heckles Joanne’s lines with insults (control freak, snob, geek) until they both quit, with the famous shared complaint that you can’t live with women or without them.

The refrain, “take me for what I am”, is the heart of the song. Both women want to be loved without conditions, and neither is willing to bend. That’s what makes it funny and sad at once: they agree completely about the problem, and that’s exactly why they can’t fix it. Larson’s lyric also nods to Puccini’s La Bohème, the opera Rent is based on. Maureen’s opening verse about people staring at her in the street echoes Musetta’s waltz.

Who sings Take Me or Leave Me in Rent?

Maureen Johnson and Joanne Jefferson sing it. In the original Broadway production, which opened at the Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996, Maureen was Idina Menzel and Joanne was Fredi Walker (IBDB). Rent has music, lyrics and book by Jonathan Larson, who died suddenly on the day of the show’s first Off-Broadway preview and never saw its success. For more on both women, see our Rent character descriptions.

Did Tracie Thoms sing Take Me or Leave Me in the Rent movie?

Yes. In Chris Columbus’s 2005 film, Tracie Thoms played Joanne and sang the song opposite Idina Menzel, who returned as Maureen. Most of the original Broadway principals came back for the film, but Fredi Walker did not, so Thoms is the Joanne many fans know best. That’s why “Tracie Thoms Take Me or Leave Me lyrics” is such a common search.

The film puts the song in a different scene. On stage, Maureen and Joanne are rehearsing another protest when the argument breaks out. In the film, the fight erupts at their engagement party, after Maureen flirts with another woman.

Where does the song fall in Rent?

It comes in Act Two, after the New Year’s scenes and before “Without You”. On stage it happens around Valentine’s Day, as Maureen and Joanne prepare another protest. Maureen criticizes Joanne’s controlling behavior, Joanne criticizes Maureen’s flirting, and they break up after an ultimatum. The two do find their way back to each other later, in the emotional fallout after Angel’s death. For the full running order, see our Rent songs explained guide.

Who sang it at the 2010 Hollywood Bowl Rent?

For three nights in August 2010, the Hollywood Bowl staged a concert production of Rent directed by Neil Patrick Harris. Nicole Scherzinger played Maureen and Tracie Thoms reprised her film role as Joanne. The screenshots in this post are from that production.
