Prisoner 24601 in Les Misérables: Who Is Jean Valjean?

LES MISERABLES Posters Featuring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne ...

Prisoner 24601 is Jean Valjean, the hero of Les Misérables, who served 19 years in the galleys for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving children, five for the theft and the rest for trying to escape. In the opening number Javert releases him on parole but calls him only by his number, which sets up the cat-and-mouse story of the whole musical.

This post began as a home for the official 2012 film clip of that parole scene, and the clip is still below. We’ve expanded it to answer the questions people actually ask about 24601: who he is, where the number comes from, which song it’s in, and whether it hides a secret meaning.

Who is Prisoner 24601 in Les Misérables?

Prisoner 24601 is Jean Valjean, the central character of Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel and the musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil. In the novel he is a poor tree-pruner from Faverolles. In 1795 he breaks a baker’s window and takes a loaf of bread to feed his widowed sister’s seven children. He is sentenced to five years in the galleys, and his repeated escape attempts stretch that to 19 years. Hugo writes that at the Toulon prison, everything that made up his life, even his name, was erased: he became “number 24,601” (Les Misérables, Project Gutenberg).

He is released in October 1815, bitter and branded by the yellow passport of an ex-convict. After the Bishop of Digne shows him mercy, he breaks parole, takes a new name and spends the rest of his life trying to become an honest man while Javert hunts him. For his full story and the rest of the cast, see our Les Misérables characters explained guide.

Why does Javert call Valjean 24601?

Because to Javert, Valjean isn’t a man. He’s a convict, and a convict is a number. In the musical’s Prologue, Valjean insists on his name and Javert keeps replying with “24601”. That clash sums up the whole conflict. Javert believes people can’t change and the law is absolute. Valjean spends the rest of the show proving that a person can be redeemed.

The number comes back at key moments. In “Who Am I?”, Valjean decides to reveal himself in court to save an innocent man who has been arrested in his place, and he ends the song by declaring that he is 24601. The number he was given to erase his identity becomes a statement of who he is.

What song is 24601 sung in?

The number first appears in the opening sequence of the musical, usually called the Prologue. Its first section, the convicts’ “Work Song”, is also known by its refrain, “Look Down”. On stage the convicts are working in a chain gang. In the 2012 film the track is titled “Look Down”, and Tom Hooper staged it with prisoners hauling a huge ship into dry dock. The number returns at the end of “Who Am I?” in Act One.

For where each song falls in the show, see our Les Misérables songs explained guide.

What happens in the parole scene in the 2012 film?

After the opening “Look Down” sequence, Javert (Russell Crowe) calls Valjean (Hugh Jackman) forward, orders him to haul a huge broken mast, flag and all, as a show of strength, and hands him his ticket of leave. Valjean tells Javert his name, and Javert answers with his number. It’s the start of a pursuit that lasts the whole film. Here is the official clip:

Helmed by The King’s Speech’s Academy Award®-winning director, Tom Hooper, Les Misérables stars Hugh Jackman, Oscar® winner Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.

The film opened in the United States on December 25, 2012 and won three Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway as Fantine. Its cast sang live on set rather than miming to a pre-recorded track.

Does the number 24601 have a hidden meaning?

Hugo never explains it, so any meaning is speculation. The best-known theory comes from translator and scholar David Bellos, who suggests in The Novel of the Century (2017) that 24601 may encode 24 June 1801 (24-6-01), which Bellos connects with the date of Hugo’s own conception. Treat it as an intriguing theory, not a fact.

Two other facts are not theories. First, the number really is Hugo’s, not the musical’s invention. Second, Valjean gets a new number later in the novel: after he is recaptured, a chapter is titled “Number 24,601 Becomes Number 9,430”. In the musical only 24601 is used.

A note for searchers: “Prisoner 64201” is a common mix-up. The correct number is 24601.

Who has played Jean Valjean?

  • Colm Wilkinson created the role in English in London in 1985 and on Broadway in 1987 (IBDB).
  • Hugh Jackman played him in the 2012 film and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
  • Alfie Boe sang him in the 25th anniversary concert at the O2 in 2010 and has returned to the role many times since.
  • Liam Neeson played him in the 1998 non-musical film, one of many screen versions of the novel.

Frequently asked questions

What does 24601 mean in Les Mis?

It is Jean Valjean’s prisoner number at the Toulon galleys. Hugo uses it to show how prison erased his identity, and Javert uses it in the musical to deny that Valjean is anything more than a convict.

Why was Jean Valjean in prison?

He stole a loaf of bread for his sister’s seven hungry children. He got five years for the theft, and his escape attempts added more, so he served 19 years before his release in 1815.

Is 24601 in Victor Hugo’s novel or only the musical?

It’s in the novel. Hugo writes that at Toulon Valjean became “number 24,601”, and a later chapter is titled “Number 24,601 Becomes Number 9,430” when he gets a new number after his recapture.

Who sings “Who am I? … 24601”?

Jean Valjean sings it at the end of “Who Am I?” in Act One, when he decides to confess his identity in court rather than let an innocent man be convicted in his place.
