Wicked asks a simple question with a big answer: what if the Wicked Witch of the West wasn’t really wicked? To tell that story, the musical introduces a whole cast of characters, some familiar from The Wizard of Oz and many entirely new.

The stage musical has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel. It opened on Broadway in 2003, and two films followed: Wicked in November 2024 and Wicked: For Good in November 2025.

Elphaba

Elphaba is the show’s central character, the girl who will one day be known as the Wicked Witch of the West. She was born with green skin, which has made her an outsider all her life, even within her own family.

When we meet her, she’s arriving at Shiz University to look after her younger sister. She is prickly, intelligent and quick to defend herself, but beneath that is a deep sense of justice and a hope that she might one day be accepted. Her early song “The Wizard and I” captures that dream: she believes that meeting the Wizard will change everything.

Elphaba has extraordinary natural magical talent. As she learns more about what’s happening in Oz, she must decide whether to fit in or stand up for what’s right. Her Act One finale, “Defying Gravity,” is one of the most famous songs in modern musical theater.

Glinda

Glinda, who starts the show as Galinda, is Elphaba’s roommate at Shiz and the future Glinda the Good. She’s bubbly, popular, ambitious and used to getting her way. At first, she and Elphaba can’t stand each other, as their duet “What Is This Feeling?” makes clear.

Glinda is often played for comedy, especially in “Popular,” where she decides to give Elphaba a makeover. But she is far more than comic relief. Her journey is about learning what goodness really means and whether being liked is the same as doing right. By the end, she’s one of the most complex characters in the show.

The friendship between Elphaba and Glinda is the heart of Wicked. Their final duet, “For Good,” is about how people change each other.

Fiyero

Fiyero is a prince from the Vinkus who arrives at Shiz and quickly becomes the center of attention. He presents himself as carefree and shallow, singing “Dancing Through Life” about avoiding anything serious.

Over the course of the story, Fiyero reveals more depth. He becomes caught up in the conflict between Elphaba and Glinda, both personally and politically. He’s part of a love triangle that shapes both acts.

Nessarose

Nessarose is Elphaba’s younger sister. She uses a wheelchair, and their father has always favored her over Elphaba. She’s sweet but sheltered, and she longs for love and independence.

As the story moves forward, Nessarose takes on more power and responsibility, and her choices have serious consequences. Fans of The Wizard of Oz will recognize where her story connects to the classic tale.

Boq

Boq is a Munchkin student at Shiz who is smitten with Glinda. Glinda, in turn, steers him toward Nessarose. He’s earnest and a bit hapless at first. His story also eventually links to a famous character from The Wizard of Oz, though we’ll let you discover that one yourself.

Madame Morrible

Madame Morrible is the headmistress of Shiz University. She spots Elphaba’s magical talent and takes her under her wing, promising to introduce her to the Wizard. She’s grand, ambitious and fond of long words.

As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Morrible has her own agenda and is closely tied to the power structures of Oz.

The Wizard

The Wizard of Oz is the ruler of Oz, admired by everyone and seen as all-powerful. Elphaba dreams of meeting him. When she finally does, she learns that things in the Emerald City are not what they seem.

The Wizard is charming and folksy, and his song “Wonderful” shows how he sees himself and his rule. He’s a fascinating figure because he isn’t a cartoon villain; he’s a man who believes his own story about why he does what he does.

Doctor Dillamond

Doctor Dillamond is a Goat and a history professor at Shiz. In Oz, some animals, called Animals with a capital A, can speak and teach. Dillamond notices that Animals are slowly losing their rights and voices, and he shares his concerns with Elphaba.

His story is central to Wicked’s themes. It’s what first sets Elphaba on her path of standing up against injustice.

Elphaba’s Father

Elphaba’s father is the Governor of Munchkinland. He openly prefers Nessarose and treats Elphaba coldly because of her green skin. His rejection shapes both daughters’ lives.

Chistery and the Flying Monkeys

Chistery is a monkey who becomes part of a significant moment in the story. Fans of The Wizard of Oz will be able to guess how the famous flying monkeys enter the plot.

The Students and Citizens of Oz

Wicked’s ensemble plays students at Shiz, citizens of the Emerald City, guards, Animals and more. They aren’t just background: in numbers like “No One Mourns the Wicked” and “One Short Day,” the crowd shows how public opinion in Oz is formed and how quickly it can turn. That idea, that a whole society can agree on who the villain is, sits at the center of the musical.

How the Characters Connect to The Wizard of Oz

Wicked runs alongside the classic Oz story. Several characters are connected to famous figures in The Wizard of Oz, and Act Two in particular overlaps with events from Dorothy’s journey. The fun of Wicked is seeing familiar moments from a completely different point of view. Part of the payoff is realizing how much depends on who tells the story.

Musical vs Movie Characters

The films keep the same core characters as the stage show. With more screen time, some, like Doctor Dillamond and Elphaba’s family, get more scenes. The film cast includes Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Marissa Bode as Nessarose and Ethan Slater as Boq. On Broadway, the roles of Elphaba and Glinda were originated by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth.
