Most “how to see a musical” guides assume you live near Times Square or the West End. This one is for everyone else: fans in Asia, Australia, Latin America and anywhere else who want the real thing, either a legal filmed production at home or a touring company in a nearby city. If you’re in the Philippines, our separate guide on how to watch Broadway-style musicals in Manila covers local companies, venues and theater etiquette; this guide focuses on streaming and the regional tour calendar.
Where can you stream Broadway musicals legally?
A “proshot” is an official, professional recording of a live stage production, as distinct from a movie adaptation (New York Theatre Guide). Here are the main legal places to find them, plus a few major movie musicals. Most need a subscription or a rental fee, and the titles listed are based on US availability unless noted.
- Disney+: Hamilton, the original Broadway cast filmed in June 2016 (New York Theatre Guide), plus the filmed West End production of Frozen, Newsies filmed live, and film musicals like Into the Woods (2014) (Broadway Direct).
- BroadwayHD: the biggest dedicated theater streamer, with more than 200 filmed Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals, plays and concerts, including Next to Normal (London, 2025), Shrek the Musical and the Pippin 50th Anniversary Concert (Broadway Direct). BroadwayHD says it can be watched internationally, though prices and individual titles vary by region because of licensing (BroadwayHD Viewer Care).
- National Theatre at Home: rent or subscribe to full-length stage productions, including the musicals Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, Next to Normal and Waitress (NT at Home).
- Netflix: the Broadway revival of Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along with Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez, plus films including tick, tick… BOOM!, Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and Wicked: For Good, which has streamed there since July 20, 2026 (Broadway Direct).
- Apple TV+: Come From Away, filmed live on Broadway (Broadway Direct).
- Peacock (US): the Wicked (2024) and Dear Evan Hansen (2021) films (Broadway Direct).
- The Roku Channel: a filmed London production of Heathers: The Musical (New York Theatre Guide).
- PBS Great Performances (US): selected stage captures are free to watch on PBS’s website for a limited time after broadcast (New York Theatre Guide).
Many of these services aren’t available in every country, and even where a service exists, its catalog can differ. Use the service’s own search, or a tracker such as JustWatch, set to your country.
Is there a Hadestown or SIX movie you can watch?
Hadestown: The Musical is a stage capture filmed over three performances at London’s Lyric Theatre in 2025, with the five original Broadway principals: Reeve Carney, Eva Noblezada, André De Shields, Amber Gray and Patrick Page. It opened in North American cinemas on July 24, 2026 and in UK cinemas from October 13, 2026 (Playbill). In the US it has been available to rent or buy digitally since August 25, 2026, through services including Prime Video and Apple TV, and on DVD and Blu-ray since October 20, 2026 (Billboard, Decider). Outside North America and the UK, check your local digital store; we haven’t confirmed every region. Get to know the show first with Hadestown songs explained and Hadestown characters explained.
SIX the Musical Live! was captured at London’s Vaudeville Theatre with the six original West End queens and opened in US cinemas on August 14, 2026 (Focus Features). As of October 17, 2026, JustWatch lists it as in theaters with no US streaming offer (JustWatch). Meet the queens in SIX the Musical characters explained, and find more like it in musicals like SIX.

What does it cost to watch musicals at home?
There are three main pricing models, and it helps to know which one you’re paying for:
- General streaming subscriptions (Disney+, Netflix, Apple TV+, Peacock, Paramount+): if you already pay for one, its musicals cost nothing extra. This is the cheapest way to see Hamilton, Come From Away or Merrily We Roll Along.
- Theater-only services (BroadwayHD, National Theatre at Home): a dedicated subscription, or a per-title rental on NT at Home, gives you deeper catalogs of full stage productions. They’re worth it if you plan to watch several shows.
- Digital rental or purchase: new releases often start here. In the US, Billboard reported Hadestown: The Musical at $24.99 to buy and $19.99 for a 48-hour rental on Prime Video and Apple TV at launch (Billboard). Prices in other countries differ.
Cinema screenings, like the SIX and Hadestown captures, are another option, and seeing them on a big screen with an audience comes closest to the live experience.
How do you avoid bootlegs and scam tickets?
Bootlegs are unauthorized recordings, usually filmed secretly from the audience. They break theater rules (venues such as Marina Bay Sands explicitly ban filming and recording during performances), and they don’t pay the artists. Signs you’re watching one: shaky or partly blocked footage, audience noise, a hazy picture, an upload from a random account rather than the show’s verified channel, or a title like “full show”. Legal options are listed above; official show YouTube channels post clips and trailers, not full shows.
For tickets:
- Buy from the venue or the official ticketing partner named on the producer’s or venue’s site (for example, Marina Bay Sands for Sands Theatre shows).
- Follow the official producers, such as Base Entertainment Asia in Singapore and GMG Productions in Manila, for on-sale dates and waitlists.
- Avoid social-media sellers and resale listings well above face value, and never pay by bank transfer to a stranger.
- Check the age policy before you buy. Some shows, like Moulin Rouge! in Singapore, refuse admission to younger children, and tickets are often non-refundable.
Which musicals should you watch first if you’re new?
Start with the big three that are easiest to find legally: Hamilton on Disney+ (see our Hamilton complete fan guide), Come From Away on Apple TV+ and the new Hadestown film. If you love classic spectacle, start with our Phantom of the Opera complete fan guide.
